He moved to Arizona in 1986 where he met his wife. Sonia is a native of Arizona and was born in San Manuel, she was raised in the tri-community. They met at the Sears Headquarters in Tempe where they both worked. J.R. had been serving the Lord for 11 years at that time. He planted a church in the nearby city of Queen Creek. He invited Sonia to attend the church and led her to the Lord. They were married soon after. God called them back to the tri-community in 2016. They have two young adult daughters Juliana and Jaden. The girls have been a blessing to the youth center and are a big part of the ministry. The Chavez family are close knit and serve the Lord together in multiple ways. They each have a heart for the lost, especially for those in the young community. They find it pure joy in reaching young people for Jesus.

J.R. and Sonia home-schooled their daughters which allowed them the freedom to travel and create beautiful memories serving the Lord as a family. The family prays that the Holy Spirit will lead the youth in our community to the youth center and they pray they see it at its full capacity.
